  1. Hello lawyers I love, I hope you are looking forward to a wonderful weekend with family, friends and time in the great outdoors. I am thrilled it's summer! And, this summer, for me, has been all about getting back into the media and getting my content out into the world to help people make wise financial decisions for themselves and their families. In service to that, I wanted to let you know about a few things I have going on, that could impact you, and also make sure you have the guidance you need to be making good decisions for yourself and your families, plus to educate your communities. First and foremost, as a lawyer, you may not think of yourself as someone who offers financial advice. And, yet, as a trusted advisor to families and business owners, I want to invite you to shift your thinking on this and get yourself educated enough to feel confident talking about financial matters and helping your clients think about these matters at a high level, so you can help them get into conversations with their families about it, as this is one of your primary jobs, IMO, and WILL set you apart from every other lawyer in your community + is a big part of what they cannot get from a documents only service, online. This does not mean that you need to be an actual financial planner, insurance advisor, or tax strategist, as there are specialists who handle such things, but as a lawyer who is a trusted advisor you must be knowledgeable enough on these topics to be an OBJECTIVE sounding board for your clients, and help them to choose the right financial planners, insurance advisors and tax strategists for their personal situation, IF you want to be seen as a true advisor, and get paid for more than just documents. You want your clients to see YOU as the objected, trusted advisor who helps them to make good decisions about the use of their resources, even though you are not paid a commission to sell products. All wealthy people have a team of advisors working on their legal, insurance, financial and tax matters and, in the past, the people we serve -- mainstreet, mom and pop, American people -- could not (and did not) get good legal, insurance, financial and tax advice because there simply weren't good models for it that didn't involve mis-aligned incentives. But, that's one of the things we are changing here at NLBM. One of the most valuable things you can do is to be educating your clients beyond the traditional scope of documents and strategies, and into what I call "eyes wide open decision-making" -- and this means getting yourself into position to understand the full scope of legal, insurance, financial and tax (LIFT) matters your clients and their families are facing, and then speaking to those matters in your community from an educational perspective (best form of marketing you can do for yourself and your practice), and partnering with people you trust to provide the services that you don't (you don't have to be a financial advisor, sell insurance or be a CPA), with you in "quarterback" role, coordinating the advice and ensuring it gets executed properly. For many of you, this needs to begin with you looking at your own financial realities, and that of your family's, with fresh eyes, as you have perhaps not done such a great job here in the past, or have not been educated on these matters. If that's the case, DO NOT WORRY ... your mistakes are your greatest opportunities to learn, grow and evolve, and then share what you learn with your clients. If this feels scary or overwhelming to you in any way, I want to reassure you that you have everything you need to be able to learn how to make good financial decisions for yourself, for your family, and then to help your clients to do the same. Believe me, if I can do this, so can you. And, we will be creating more and more systems, strategic alliances and support to get you more educated in these areas. So where do you start? Well, first and foremost, start with shift #1 from the 5 shifts -- GET CONGRUENT. And that means starting at home with your own family. I'm doing that myself. You cannot do this soon enough, in my opinion. If you have Qs about anything you read here, please comment here, be willing to share your own lack of clarity, uncertainty, not knowing how to make good decisions perhaps, or talk to your families, perhaps, as that's how you learn. It's okay to not know. There was a time I did not know too, and made over a million dollars of mistakes from that place. And now I do know. Watch the NEW Enough Course modules. Please make sure you have fully accessed all that is available to you here. If you need support with PPP, one of my eyes wide open members shared this resource yesterday: https://www.mbecp.com/ She said that they were able to increase her PPP from $5400 to $20,000. If you need support with EIDL, I have a couple of contacts for you, 1 who you can pay to help you get your application in and maximize what you receive (his name is Jon Caldwell, email: simplecorpfunding@gmail.com) and he can also help you with business credit funding in general. Please make sure he knows I sent you. And an SBA contract lawyer named Eugene Sunday (Gene), who you can reach at: (202) 823 0450 who can check on status of your application once it's been filed. Coming down the line, I will be returning to the media to help people begin to become more aware/think about these issues for themselves and their families. I had my first interview with CBS San Antonio last week, and then one with ABC Sac coming up next week, and NBC Washington DC week after, and I'll be on TDAmeritrade Network show on Monday. I'll post links once they are available. Please use this thread to discuss these matters, and begin to get yourself into the mindset of trusted advisor on legal, insurance, financial and tax matters -- with you as "quarterback". That means that this is the time for you to start networking with the financial advisors, insurance professionals, and tax strategists in your community so you can find the one's you trust, the really good one's because you'll be able to bring them business, and create a team of people to serve your clients. So, the final thing I want to leave you with is this: you have the opportunity to be in "pole position" for your clients and bring lots of referrals to advisors in your community. Get out there and begin networking with other professionals from that perspective and FIND THE BEST ONE's for the clients that YOU will serve. Do not compromise here. There are many not great advisors out there. And there are many great advisors who aren't the right fit for YOUR client base. Begin to consider who you want to serve, and what they really need when it comes to a comprehensive legal, insurance, financial and tax team and how you can create that in your community.   2. Dear lawyers, Each week we write articles for our Personal Family Lawyer and Family Business Lawyer members to use in their email newsletters, on their website and in social media. And this week, I'm adding a piece of content not just for our members, but for all of you to use, who maybe have not known what to write or share with your community, and who want to say something, with the hopes that it will be a start for you to stand up and share your position on human rights and systemic racism. If you have already been speaking up and out, in your own words, thank you. If you have not because you have not known what to say, or how to say it, and you are scared to be messy, please let this be a start. You can edit this and make it your own, or use it as-is. This is the case for all of you, not just members. If you do use it, please let it be the beginning of your education and your stand in your community to move beyond the systemic racism that impacts ALL of us. Our country was built on the backs of unpaid labor, and we have both benefited from that labor, and also been harmed by it, some more than others. And, it all continues to impact us negatively to this day, even when we have the privilege of not seeing it or feeling it directly. As lawyers, leaders, and business owners who have an extremely valuable service to offer, we have the privilege of the time, energy, attention and money to shift this through our leadership, which to me means first taking a stand and speaking out with the hopes of waking up others to what we are seeing, then getting our own education and shifting our business practices to align with the economic and culturally reality we want to create. I thought it was enough to be “not racist”, but I am now learning that it’s not enough. To be a protector, and a stand for civil liberties for all of us, I must learn to become anti-racist.   3. Dear lawyers ... I’m sure I don’t need to be the one to tell you that this is an intense time. Internally, here at NLBM, we feel proud of how we supported you through the need to move virtual quickly and face our new COVID reality, and now we are looking at how to support you given the reality of rising racial tensions in many of our communities. Through listening, watching and our own internal process, we’ve come to see that being “not racist” is not enough. We must become anti-racist. And, we are listening and learning. For our team at NLBM, the intensity we are experiencing is a result of both what’s happening in the world, and also in response to the significant growth initiatives we have been undertaking to continue improving our services and offerings for you, our beloved community. To support the health and wellness of our team, we have decided to create tomorrow (Friday, June 5th) as a company-wide mental health day so that our team can be with their feelings around what’s happening in the world, and here in the United States as we collectively face so much pain. As such, we will not have staff available to answer questions or support you with any requests tomorrow or through the weekend, and look forward to being back with you, rested and ready to go, and to support you fully on Monday, June 8th. For those of you working with business owners, or considering working with business owners, I wanted to give you just a bit of insight about how important your role is during this time, and how it's likely quite different than the way you've been operating. If you are serving business owners, you need to be thinking of yourself as a COACH, CONSULTANT, COUNSELOR, GUIDE to your business owner clients, helping them to make the best decisions they possibly can right now about what to do. This may mean getting into their financials with them, looking at their revenue model, helping them to access stimulus money, clean up their corporate reality, and there will be legal work that comes from the counseling/consulting, but first and foremost you need to think of yourself as a counselor right now. Now, more than ever your law degree needs to be used in a new way. You are not just here to draft legal documents, but instead to help your clients make good decisions.   5. Hi @Angie Knarr what I am hearing is that if you get the grant and don't qualify for the loan, you keep the grant! Yeehaw, apply for the grant/advance. And, I've also heard if you also need PPP that your PPP will be offset by the $10k advance/grant from EIDL. And I've ALSO heard you can get both EIDL and PPP, you just need to use them for different things. Hope that helps!   8. You would normally charge $750 for a FWPS without homework completed in advance, where you are literally doing the homework with them in the first meeting. In this case, that homework is the PRM. If you can spend that time with them at a discount (and apply toward their planning), or for free, do. But you also need to be clear on the value of your time. In this case, I assume that if they spend the hour w you completing the PRM, they will do further EP, and if you have the space financially to count on that, you can do PRM with them for free, and know you'll get paid for the EP, so really you'll have to decide what's possible for you based on your time/money equation.   10. Oh sorry, Nara -- I'm using shorthand. 🙂 PRM = Personal Resource Map. It's the inventory created from the training I hosted last week. Were you able to be on there? Yes to health care directive/guardianship AND the most important thing beyond the guardianship of their kids, is a list of what they own, where it is, and how loved ones could find/access it. That's the point of the PRM. Watch the training if you have not already and then get back w me w Qs. A
  11. Not off brand at all! Let's create a solution for them. They need the PRM as the first step. Prob is they do not have brainpower or time right now to create it, so let's get creative. How can you help them get their assets inventoried and into the PRM, as step 1? If you do that WITH them, you will know exactly what estate planning they need and can just tell them. So, seems to me they have to be willing to give SOME time to it because there are things in their knowledge/awareness that cannot be in yours without it. If they can give you 1 hour, you can complete the PRM with them, on the phone or a zoom. They could literally be laying in bed w their eyes closed, while you ask them questions from the PRM and fill it out for them. Then, you TELL them (they are prob exhausted with decision fatigue!) what the legal docs are they need based on your exp completing the PRM with them, what it will cost and how easily you can get it done for them, and you ask them some more Qs, keeping things as SIMPLE as possible, to have the effect and impact they want. And then you draft the plan. What do you think about that plan of action?! I think you are seeing a huge need Nara, and yes we can help! So important. Not off brand. 100% on brand. Ali
  12. @Jeneva Vazquez these are two really great examples of how health care directives need to be updated. I will for sure mention them in my training on Friday. Regarding language for the first example, how about this: Despite anything stated to the contrary in this document, I expressly DO want intubation or ventilation, if associated with the Coronavirus or any similar respiratory infection in which full recovery is expected with intubation or ventilation.

  14. Hello lawyers! On today's Law Business Success Coaching Call, we discussed how to best finance your next level of expansion. One of the things we discussed is business credit cards, and we have a resource for you on that if you want that handled for you through Fund and Grow. That's in Module 14 of the curriculum, here.
